Assistant Director of Athletics

Carthage College, home to one of the premier NCAA Division III athletic programs in the United States, seeks a dynamic Assistant Director of Athletics to build on our successful, resource-rich program. The successful candidate will bring to Carthage's state-of-the-art athletic facilities exceptional leadership and management skills, competitive drive, and clear passion for the value of collegiate athletics in a student-athlete's education.

Carthage fields 24 NCAA Division III varsity sports. Many of our teams compete in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW), widely regarded as one of the most competitive Division III conferences in the country. The College flies 115 banners from 24 different sports earned in the last 25 years, signifying both conference championships and top-eight national finishes.

Carthage has invested more than $200 million in facilities in recent years with a substantial proportion of those funds devoted to renovating and building new athletic facilities. Recent projects include a 2017 renovation of Art Keller Field and the surrounding track and the 2013 reconstruction of Augie Schmidt Field (baseball). Other facilities include Tarble Arena, the N. E. Tarble Athletic, and Recreation Center, and Smeds Tennis Center. The College's athletic endowment is approaching $3 million.

Job Summary:

The Assistant Director of Athletics will assist in all aspects of the administration of an intercollegiate athletic department.  Additionally, this position will oversee event management and facilities, NCAA compliance, and student-athlete success.

Major Areas of Responsibility:


  • Engage in strategic planning to enhance and strengthen the department to achieve program goals
  • Review department policy and practices to identify opportunities and implement procedures to enhance operations
  • Demonstrate and promote multicultural awareness by contributing to an inclusive, diverse and respectful community
  • Assist and participate in department search and hiring processes
  • Serve as an athletic department resource and liaison to the campus community including serving on campus committees as appropriate

 Event Management and Facilities 

  • Manage and promote athletic events and represent the department at athletic and community events
  • Coordinate contest and facilities scheduling, use of facilities, event and post-season contest set-ups, logistics, and assist with game operations
  • Oversee the scheduling of all athletic contests to ensure an accurate and appropriate department schedule. Ensure department has accurate and complete game contracts associated with home and away contests.
  • Oversee the management of athletic events including training and scheduling of event staff. Manage concession stands at various athletic contests; audit and reconcile cash flow; prepare and submit related reports.

 NCAA Compliance and Student-Athlete Success 

  • Serve as NCAA compliance officer and ensure college compliance with NCAA and conference rules
  • Develop a comprehensive compliance program for intercollegiate athletics including eligibility, rules test, transfer regulations, playing and practice seasons, medical hardships, sports safety training, recruiting, and rules education for coaches, student-athletes and alumni
  • Ensure department meets all institution, conference, and NCAA eligibility and reporting requirements
  • Develop programs and relationships with campus partners to support the academic success of student-athletes and their overall well-being. This includes supporting the missed class alert system.

 Additional Duties 

  • Support the Director in the day-to-day operations of a comprehensive intercollegiate athletic department including new initiatives and other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience Required:

  • Requires a Bachelor's Degree; Master's Degree preferred
  • Requires 1-3 years of athletic administration, coaching, and/or related experience at the college or university level. Experience at a Division III institution is preferred.
  • Requires excellent oral and written communication skills to effectively communicate with employees, students, athletes, faculty, and community members
  • Requires the ability to use a personal computer and web browser, spreadsheet, Microsoft office, and social media platforms
  • Requires excellent time management, project management, and knowledge of NCAA rules.
  • Requires knowledge of and the ability to use a variety of standard office equipment such as a telephone and computer keyboard
