Head Women's Soccer Coach

Carthage College, home to one of the premier NCAA Division III athletic programs in the United States, invites applications  to coach the women's soccer team.  

Carthage fields 24 NCAA Division III varsity sports. Many of our teams compete in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW), widely regarded as one of the most competitive Division III conferences in the country. The College flies 115 banners from 24 different sports earned in the last 25 years, signifying both conference championships and top-eight national finishes.

Carthage has invested more than $200 million in facilities in recent years with a substantial proportion of those funds devoted to renovating and building new athletic facilities. Recent projects include a 2017 renovation of Art Keller Field and the surrounding track and the 2013 reconstruction of Augie Schmidt Field (baseball). Other facilities include Tarble Arena, the N. E. Tarble Athletic, and Recreation Center, and Smeds Tennis Center. The College's athletic endowment is approaching $3 million.

Job Summary:

The Head Coach will lead and direct all aspects of the competitive intercollegiate sport to include coaching and teaching effective strategy, technique and training, recruitment of qualified student-athletes, and teaching and/or carrying out assigned administrative responsibilities within the Intercollegiate Athletics department. The head coach is responsible for ensuring compliance with NCAA, conference, and Carthage College policies. The Head Coach is involved with some aspects of alumni relations within his/her sport and supports fundraising efforts for special initiatives in their program or the Athletics Department. This position reports to the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics & Recreational Sports and may also receive supervision, direction, and guidance from the Assistant Director. This position provides guidance, direction, and supervision to assistant coaches, other staff, and student assistants as assigned.

Main Responsibilities:

  1. Plan, direct, and conduct in-season, non-traditional, and post-season team and individual athlete practices and competitions
  2. Design team and individual development plans to meet team needs. Teach proper skills, skill development, and team concepts to student-athletes.
  3. Develop, demonstrate, and promote multicultural awareness to contribute to cultivating an inclusive, diverse, and respectful College community
  4. Develop competition strategies with appropriate tactics and prepare team as needed for upcoming opponents
  5. Oversee the promotion of student-athlete well-being in all training sessions, conditioning activities, practice activities, and competitions
  6. Monitor the academic progress of each student-athlete. Council and advise student-athletes regarding plans and goals to achieve academic success, appropriate social conduct, other life skills topics, communication with media, and other personal or sport-related issues.
  7. Oversee, coordinate, and supervise recruitment efforts to include identification of prospective student- athletes and included appropriate correspondence via mail, e-mail, telephone, text and in-person visits. Coordinate and oversee recruitment efforts of assistant coach(es).
  8. Oversee the process of selecting, maintaining, monitoring and evaluating all team members; including athlete talent assessment, academic eligibility, and individual sport performance 
  9. Attend and participate in appropriate national or regional level coaching clinics and/or conventions to improve and increase overall knowledge of coaching techniques and practices.
  10. Prepare and submit sport related budget and provide specific input on all team travel, lodging and meals. Manage College resources effectively and within budget plan.
  11. Evaluate, select and recommend for purchase sport related equipment, uniform and supplies. Oversee the distribution and recovery of all equipment, uniforms and supplies.
  12. Assist and collaborate respectively with the appropriate athletics administrators creating practice and competition schedules 
  13. Oversee the arrangement of officials for all appropriate home competitions 
  14. Identify problems and/or concerns regarding athletic facilities and work with the Assistant Director of Athletics or other athletics administrators in an attempt to resolve facility-related concerns, especially those involving safety issue.
  15. Participate in identifying candidates for assistant coaching positions and assist in the selection process. Supervise and evaluate the performance of full and part-time assistant coaches, graduate assistants and volunteer coaches and provide input on their evaluations 
  16. Engage in various fundraising projects, programs and activities promoting the athletics program to support department and sport specific fundraising goals are met
  17. Serve on various College committees and seek out opportunities to serve on national and regional sports committees 
  18. Complete various assigned reports including the sport related annual report, and submit to immediate supervisor in a timely manner 
  19. Meet annually with immediate supervisor and/or the Director to review student athlete and administrative evaluations, and establish personal and professional goals and objectives for the following year 
  20. Perform other related duties including teaching and/or managing an administrative assignment in the athletics program

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
  • Requires a Bachelor's Degree; Master's Degree preferred
  • Requires 1-3 years of athletic administration, coaching, and/or related experience at the college or university level. Experience at a Division III institution is preferred.
  • Requires excellent oral and written communication skills to effectively communicate with employees, students, athletes, faculty, and community members
  • Requires the ability to use a personal computer and web browser, spreadsheet, Microsoft office, and social media platforms
  • Requires excellent time management, project management, and knowledge of NCAA rules.
  • Requires knowledge of and the ability to use a variety of standard office equipment such as a telephone and computer keyboard
